'There are no memories of you here' 2007 - 2009
by Sam Johnson
About the work:
'There are no memories of you here’ (2007 - 2009) is an on-going series of large-scale digitally constructed montages by Sam Johnson. The work aims to question the relationship between a landscape and the many memories which it can possess. After the loss of a loved one, it is easy to find peace and tranquillity in the place where they physically rest, but true memories can only be found in the everyday haunts where time was spent together. By using the photomontage style, I have been able to place these ‘memories’ into the landscapes, which surround the solitary figure at the far left of each image. This leaves the figure isolated as the ‘memories’ dance and play around him in his vast surroundings. Each of the images is inspired by, and given the title of a line from, a poem of the same name.
Images from this series have already won and been finalists in many competitions as well as being exhibited in galleries around the UK, and have recently been longlisted for the British Journal of Photography's 'Project Assistance Award 2009'. It is now Sam's hope to exhibit the work as a full series during 2009 and 2010.
